Activities naturally centre on Big 5 safaris - lion, elephant, leopard, Cape buffalo and the black rhinoceros all roam the area. Expert guides will explain all about the reserve and its fascinating biodiversity. Most drives take place in the early morning and late afternoon, when viewing opportunities are at their best, though supervised walking safaris are available as well. While the focus is very much on spotting wildlife, stargazing is also a popular pastime for those staying here. While on site, guests have access to viewing decks on two levels offering commanding views of the area, as well as a swimming pool and a dining area where meals are served. Food is freshly prepared using ingredients that are sourced locally, with dishes featuring regional and national delicacies.
Thonga beach lodge staff were brilliant, the whole place was amazing, the range of activities excellent and again out guides excellent. The food was wonderful. Again the bird guiding and general guiding was brilliant. We really enjoyed the cultural side of our visit, seeing the local communities and church etc. My only comment on thonga for future guests would be if they can afford it maybe to go for a lodge with a ocean view, our lodge was great , the childrens was quite cramped and low down with a very damp musty smell - not that they noticed it, but I think if people were expecting luxury they might not get what they wanted... saying that it was fantastic for us. The lodge staff were amazing and went out of their way for us.
We all had a fantastic time, Kirsty (our youngest) was able to go on all the game drives and we were very well looked after both on the drives and back at the lodge. The food was great, staff were all very friendly & nothing was too much trouble for them (e.g. providing hot milk for Kirsty at bedtime). The kids all enjoyed the rock pool during the day and we all loved the game drives.

The first thing you'll notice is the shake of the trees. If you're anything like me, your heart will be palpitating like crazy from excitement at this point. Slowly after, you'll begin catching glimpses of orange specks amid the leaves as orangutans swing towards the feeding platform. --- Even though Borneo is a mecca for wildlife sightings, the stars of the show ar[...]

Guests start the day with a hot drink and snack in the communal lounge, before setting out on jeeps into the park. During the game drives, the guide and tracker treat guests to their knowledge of the animals and the park itself. You could be lucky enough to see all of the Big 5 in the reserve, as well as wild dogs, hippos and hundreds of bird species too. After spending the morning spotting wildlife, guests return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast cooked fresh by the staff, and then spend the afternoon relaxing in the lodge and eating lunch before another game drive in the evening. During this evening game drive, the staff lay on sundowner drinks and snacks overlooking the waterhole, while you listen out for lions roaring in the distance. After the sun has set, the jeeps head back to the lodge for a delicious dinner (vegetarian and vegan options available!) and drinks around the campfire.
The highlight of the lodge is the opportunity to go out on walking safaris, led by a highly experienced tracker who could spot tracks and disturbed plants. This led us to have a very close encounter with a rhino that I will never forget!
Sabi Sands is a popular game reserve that shares a fenceless border with the Kruger National Park. Unlike the Kruger, though (and the other game parks in Africa on this list), the reserve is private and not open to day visitors. Sabi Sands actually consists of a group of privately owned and managed reserves. Each of these sites offers magnificent Big Five and wildlife sightings. Leopard sightings are particularly common here.
In addition to fantastic wildlife viewing opportunities, the reserves for safaris in Sabi Sands offer exclusive upmarket accommodation and thrilling safari activities. Some of these activities, such as off-road game drives, are not permitted at Kruger Park. Sabie Sands derives its name from the South African Sabie and Sand rivers. They flow through the 65 000-hectare (160,000-acre) game park, adding to its rich biodiversity.
The Sabi Sand is known for great leopard viewing, healthy rhino populations and the rest of the Big Five, making it a great wildlife destination for all levels of safari experience. The below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced here. Other typical sightings may include warthogs, baboons and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on weather and wildlife movements.
The Sabi Sand Game Reserve benefits from a great diversity of wildlife including, the Big Five as it neighbours and shares a 50 km (31mi) unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park. World-renowned for its prolific leopard sightings, strict vehicle limits at sightings ensure the exclusivity of an up-close game viewing experience with game drives traversing an area of 10,500 hectares (26,000 acres).
The Sabi Sand Game Reserve is one of the most prestigious wildlife sanctuaries in the world, neighbouring the Kruger National Park. It is famed for its leopards and incredible wildlife. The uniqueness of the lodge is its ideal positioning on the Sand River with exclusive access to the riverbed.
The lodge has been designed to ensure magnificent river views from all angles. Private decks and al fresco sitting areas are the ideal places to view wildlife using your Swarovski Optik binoculars as herds of elephants congregate in the riverbed and game roam across the landscape.

Take a peek at the three best parks of my fantastic, cheap Botswana Lodge Safari. Botswana is an enchanting country full of wildlife and untamed beauty, but these few favourites really wowed me on my budget Botswana safari.
Our game drive in Khama Rhino Sanctuary was totally packed with wildlife sightings. Seeing so many rhinos grazing in the wild was a real privilege - a touching honour given the endangered status of these large mammals.
In a unique riverside location where you can see elephants, giraffes and other animals crossing the river every day during the dry season, a Dutch couple with a team of dedicated, friendly Zambian staff run this beautiful lodge. Unlike most lodges on that side of the river, guests do not have to enter the park by car over the bridge at the main gate, but are taken by boat... Read More
